Installing a Level 2 EV charger at home makes EV ownership much more convenient. But can you get a rebate to help cover the installation cost in Ontario?
As of September 2026, there is no general provincial rebate for homeowners installing an EV charger at a single-family home in Ontario. Toronto Hydro also does not currently offer a residential EV charger installation rebate.
There are, however, other EV incentives and ways to save. Federal funding is available for certain charging infrastructure projects, Ontario has programs supporting public charging, and the province’s Ultra-Low Overnight electricity plan can make charging an EV at home less expensive.
- Ontario home EV charger rebate: No general residential rebate.
- Toronto Hydro EV charger rebate: No current residential installation rebate.
- Federal ZEVIP: Funding for eligible EV charging infrastructure projects.
- Ontario ChargeON: Funding for eligible public EV charging infrastructure.
- Ultra-Low Overnight electricity pricing: Lower overnight rates that can reduce home EV charging costs.
EV Charger Rebates and Incentives Available in Ontario
While there is no general rebate for installing an EV charger at a single-family home in Ontario, several federal and provincial programs support EV adoption and charging infrastructure. Here’s what each program covers and whether it can help with a home EV charger installation.
Federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP)
The federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program provides an incentive
of up to $5,000 toward an eligible battery-electric vehicle and up to
$2,500 for an eligible plug-in hybrid in 2026. The incentive is applied
at the point of sale for qualifying vehicles.
EVAP applies to the vehicle itself. It does not cover the purchase or
installation of a Level 2 EV charger at home.
WHAT IT COVERS
- Eligible battery-electric vehicles
- Eligible plug-in hybrid vehicles
- New vehicle purchases and leases
Home EV charger equipment and installation are not included.
Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP)
The federal Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program helps fund
larger EV charging infrastructure projects. Eligible projects can
include charging at workplaces, public locations, multi-unit residential
buildings and fleet facilities.
ZEVIP is not a standard rebate for installing a Level 2 charger at a
single-family home.
WHO IT CAN SUPPORT
- Multi-unit residential buildings
- Workplaces
- Public charging locations
- Fleet charging infrastructure
Current funding streams and application periods depend on the type of
infrastructure project.
Ontario EV ChargeON Program
Ontario’s ChargeON program supports the expansion of public EV charging
infrastructure across the province, helping add charging stations in
communities where public charging access is needed.
ChargeON is designed for eligible public charging projects. It does not
provide a rebate for installing an EV charger at an individual home.
WHAT IT SUPPORTS
- Public EV charging stations
- Eligible Ontario communities
- Charging infrastructure expansion
It should not be confused with a residential EV charger installation rebate.
Does Toronto Hydro Offer an EV Charger Rebate?
Toronto Hydro does not currently offer a residential rebate for purchasing or installing a Level 2 EV charger at home.
However, Toronto homeowners can still reduce the ongoing cost of EV charging through Ontario electricity price plans. For owners who can charge overnight, the Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) price plan can make home charging more affordable.
What Is Ontario’s Ultra-Low Overnight Electricity Price Plan?
Ontario’s Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) price plan offers a lower electricity rate between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., in exchange for higher rates during peak periods. It can be particularly useful for EV owners because most home charging can be scheduled overnight while the vehicle is parked.
For Toronto homeowners who regularly charge at night, switching to ULO can reduce the ongoing electricity cost of owning an EV. It’s important to note that ULO is an electricity pricing option, not a rebate for purchasing or installing an EV charger.
How Much Does It Cost to Install a Level 2 EV Charger in Toronto?
The cost of installing a Level 2 EV charger in Toronto depends on more than the charger itself. Every home has a different electrical setup, and the location of the charger, available capacity, and amount of electrical work required can all affect the final installation cost.
A relatively simple installation might involve mounting the charger close to the electrical panel and adding a dedicated circuit. In an older home or a detached garage, the electrician may need to run wiring a longer distance, install conduit, use load-management equipment, or make changes to the electrical panel.
Distance From the Electrical Panel
Longer cable runs require more wiring, conduit and labour.
Available Electrical Capacity
The existing service must have enough capacity to handle the additional charging load.
Charger Amperage
Higher-powered Level 2 chargers can have different circuit and wiring requirements.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Installation
Outdoor chargers may require weather-rated equipment and additional protection.
Wiring and Conduit
Finished walls, basements, garages and difficult routing can make an installation more complex.
Panel or Service Upgrades
Some homes may require panel changes, load management or a service upgrade before adding the charger.
Making the Most of Home EV Charging
While Ontario does not currently offer a general home EV charger rebate, there are still ways to make EV ownership more affordable, from federal vehicle incentives to lower overnight electricity rates.
If you’re planning a Level 2 charger installation, start by understanding your home’s electrical capacity and what the installation will require. That way, you can plan the upgrade properly and avoid surprises later.
